With millions of streams and new music on the way, 21-year-old Olivia Nelson may be the next big thing.
That only makes it so much cooler that she decided to share with PB&GJ her feelings on her latest single, “Smother Me”, her thoughts on love, and her songwriting process. “Smother Me” was a certified Tasty! Jam back when it was released in early February and more great music is on the way this month with her debut EP coming this summer, but, for now, I wanted to ask Olivia more about “Smother Me” and her description of the song. She said the song was about “experiencing infatuation and falling in love for the first time. Feeling like the wind could carry you away in one sweep, like nothing else matters. Like you’re weightless and everything in the world is suddenly brighter. I wrote this from an honest place and I wanted the music to reflect the powerfulness of that feeling. Even though the feeling of love is light, its also heavy at the same time because your words and actions carry so much weight.” The London singer sure does have a way with words.

Have things been different for you since “Someone That You Love”?
Yes, well that was the first song that was officially released so I didn’t have any music out before that. Things have definitely changed, it’s enabled me to work with even more cool people.
Is “Smother Me” a song about your first love or just the feeling that love brings?
It’s about both, I talk about my experience of being in love for the first time but I think that feeling is universal. Although love is different to everybody, certain things are relatable.
Could you tell me a little more about what you mean when you say “love is light, its also heavy at the same time”?
The feeling of love is light, it makes you feel like you could blow away with the wind. However, once you realise how deep it is, you’ve enabled yourself to get hurt by someone. There’s so many factors that contribute to why love can get heavy.
Do you have plans for any upcoming events or shows?
I’ve got lots of events in the pipeline but nothing to announce as of yet. Keep an eye out on my socials.
What’s your songwriting process like?
It’s different every time. Sometimes, I start with a phrase or poem that I like, other times I’ll have a melody and work from there.
How would you describe your sound?
R&B/Soul/Funk/Electro a mixture of those genres. Each song differs a lot from one another.
What’s your favorite song right now?
What’s something not many people know about you?
I love crisps, they’re my favourite snack food by far.
