Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats Drop New Album "UNLOCKED"

Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats Drop New Album “UNLOCKED”

The collaborative project was made in a 24-hour period and arrives with an accompanying short film.

Following Denzel Curry‘s appearance on Kenny Beats‘ YouTube freestyle and production series The Cave, the two came together to give some credence to Kenny’s infamous “let’s make some real shit now” line that he says to his guests at the end of practically every episode. Denzel and Kenny spent the next 24-hours together filming and recording eight tracks that would eventually become UNLOCKED.

The album has a very intentionally unfinished, DIY feel to it and is pretty damn funny throughout. The accompanying short film is where the laughs really come out though as Kenny and Denzel try to travel into the computer to stop their album from leaking.

This is Curry’s second release of 2020, following his thirteen-minute mix 13LOOD IN + 13LOOD OUT, but his first new “album” since 2019’s ZUUKenny has been on the grind recently, releasing a joint project with the incarcerated 03 Greedo, collaborating with the likes of Omar Apollo and Dominic Fike, as well as posting weekly episodes of The Cave.

Kenny Beats Kicks Off Season 2 Of "The Cave" With Danny Brown

Kenny Beats Kicks Off Season 2 Of “The Cave” With Danny Brown

The bi-weekly series returned this Friday.

Not even a year ago Kenny Beats kicked off his online series “The Cave” in which rappers would visit his studio and freestyle over a freshly made beat all on the fly. In its first season the show featured guest appearances from Vince Staples, Doja Cat, Denzel Curry, Freddie Gibbs, Lil Yachty and many more talented artists. To kick off the second season Danny Brown, who just shared his album uknowwhatimsaying¿, made his way down to The Cave to drop some bars. It’s been a busy week for Kenny Beats who was also featured alongside Dominic Fike in the “Phone Numbers” video that dropped on Tuesday. Watch the first episode of Season 2 of The Cave above.

Fike called on the Beats for this one.

Dominic Fike and Kenny Beats are both quickly becoming the driving forces behind the current trend in music. Kenny, an already well-known rap and trap producer who started his career working with the likes of Young Thug, ScHoolboy Q, Ab Soul and more, started his own YouTube series called The Cave just a few months ago and has since gained quite a bit of online fandom, featuring artists like Vince Staples, Rico Nasty, and Freddie Gibbs in his studio where he films the makeshift show. Just yesterday he was prominently featured in Dreamville‘s Revenge documentary about the making of the upcoming album Revenge of The Dreamers III.

Fike, on the other hand, released an EP in 2018 to mass acclaim and immediately skyrocketed to the top of Spotify playlists. After securing a BROCKHAMPTON co-sign and appearing on Kevin Abstract‘s solo EP Fike solidified his status, shared two new tracks, and held an impromptu live session in Paris last week. A funny little crossover of the two occurred when Kenny Beats scared himself by accidentally hitting play on Fike’s “3 Nights” during an episode of The Cave featuring Doja Cat. However, now, we have an official collaboration between the two with “Phone Numbers.”

Making the interesting choice to release on the 4th of July, the powerful track showing off some of Fike’s rapping skills marks the third offering from the young musician in the past month and just another in a never-ending string of releases for Beats, the man Pitchfork called “Hip-Hop Production’s Prodigal Son.” You can find “Phone Numbers” from Dominic Fike and Kenny Beats on our Tasty!
