The Tasty! Jams From July

A jam filled July.

July made it pretty hard to try and choose a song of the summer. With so many incredible releases, like new albums from Cuco, Blood Orange, and YBN Cordae, some tunes got lost in the shuffle. So here’s a quick roundup of all of last month’s jams, which you can find on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

We kicked things off with the Dreamville collaborative album, featuring J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, DaBaby, JID, and so, so many more. Then Dominic Fike and Kenny Beats hit us with “Phone Numbers” before Post Malone and Young Thug teamed for “Goodbyes.” We got a new album from JADEN, some Tasty! Jams from No Suits, Ohmfield, and quickly, quickly, as well as a new album from Hibou and a collaborative track from filous and Ashe. We also saw the return of dvsn and some big names like Bon Iver, Bonobo, and Sebastian. JVLY came through with a chill new single and Hippo Campus shared a pair of demo albums. Interview: Ocean Heights On "Young Frank," Frank Ocean & What's Next

Interview: Ocean Heights On “Young Frank,” Frank Ocean & What’s Next

I talked with Ocean Heights about their current tour, their new single “Young Frank”, and who’s the best at NBA 2K.

New Jersey newcomers Ocean Heights became instant favorites of mine after hearing their incredible single “Out The Way” last year. The beautiful blend of Indie and R&B that the band produces feels dreamy, simplistic and sensational all at once. They quickly followed up with another Tasty! Jam, the fast-paced “Kinda Love” before announcing their current tour and their most recent release, “Young Frank,” named directly after one of the band’s members. While they were on their tour bus heading from Chicago to Virginia I got the chance to ask the group a few questions in between games of NBA 2K. Check out the full interview below:

So how’s your day going so far?

Justin: It’s going good! Got up early and ate some flavorless yet nutritionally necessary eggs and bacon at the hotel before hitting the road from Chicago to NJ today.

Nice, how has the tour been? Has this been different for you from your first batch of shows?

Jake: Tour so far has been an absolute blast. The love and appreciation I have for being able to be in a different city every night meeting new people, playing new places, and sharing the stage with so many talented musicians is incomparable to anything else. This time around having the bus is a huge upgrade from having two separate cars, we don’t have to worry about getting separated (except for leaving Tylor at a gas station) and we get to yell at each other while playing Xbox on our twelve hour drives. But overall I can’t wait for more time on the road with my brothers.

Any notable moments or favorite performances?

Justin: My favorite performance of the tour so far has to be Chicago. We were direct support to L. Martin who has been one of our biggest inspirations to even become musicians so it was really one of those magical moments where you can take a step back and be like “fuck look how far we’ve come. This guy who is our hero is now playing with us.”

Tell me about your newest song “Young Frank”, it’s not often you hear a song named after one of the band members, how did it all come about?

Justin: Writing Young Frank might be the worst decision we ever made. Frank’s new found fame has gone straight to his head. We have to pull him in a chariot to and from each gig, hold his Juul to his lips when he desires, prepare him breakfast every morning. It’s really becoming an issue. Good guy though.

And what’s Frankie think about the song? Is that 4:20 run time intentional or just fate?

Young Frank: I was always destined for stardom and it’s about time I’ve gotten the recognition that I deserve. Since its release my standard of living has increased tenfold. But like all good things in life, celebrity status has its downsides. Sometimes the grapes that the band so willingly feed me are slightly out of season and in conclusion… SMOKE WEED ER’Y DAY.

Speaking of Frank, if you’re going to space and could only take one, are you taking Blonde, Endless, Channel Orange or Nostalgia Ultra?

Justin: I’m a Blonde boi.

Who’s the best at NBA 2K?

Carboni: Well, we can all agree that Jake is certainly the worst. His only move consists of constantly dribbling and passing until I’ve breathed my last. Justin is surprisingly nimble, but he always uses LeBron so I’m gonna have to play a few more rounds with him before I can truly judge his abilities. Also I never played 2K before yesterday.

What’s the future look like for Ocean Heights? Where do you see yourselves in a year from now?

Tylor: The certainty of Ocean Heights’ future often plays out like a roller coaster ride. Most days it seems as though the world is our oyster and we could do just about anything, but then every so often the days can drag a bit and tend to feel a little less bright. But that doesn’t mean we would be ready to give up any time soon. In a year’s time, our hope is to see a brand new EP or album in our discography and to get back out on the road ASAP hopefully many times over.

You can find more from Ocean Heights on Spotify, Instagram and Facebook. You can also buy tickets to their current tour here.

Flume Teams With Reo Cragun For Explosive New "Quits EP"

Flume Teams With Reo Cragun For Explosive New “Quits EP”

Flume and Reo Cragun follow up on their previous collab, “Friends,” with two more new tracks.

Flume has had a very busy 2019. After making his comeback in March with the impressive Hi This Is Flume mixtape he immediately doubled down a week later by sharing the Reo Cragun featuring “Friends.” That wasn’t enough for Flume though. Two months went by and he once again had a new track to share, “Let You Know,” featuring London Grammar— a mainstay on our Tasty! Jams playlist since its release. As if all that wasn’t enough to fix your Flume fill he dropped an awesome 5-track mixtape as GØAT.

All of that leads to today and the release of the Quits EP, Flume’s fifth release of the year. Featuring two new tracks, “Quits” and “Levitate,” the quick EP contains vocals from Cragun on all three songs and some of Flume’s signature production. I actually was able to catch Reo Cragun last month in Los Angeles during a Future Classic showcase performance where he brought “Friends” to life. And while “Friends” still remains the standout track from the record all three songs are bangers. You can “Quits” on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

YBN Cordae Impresses On Debut Album "The Lost Boy"

YBN Cordae Impresses On Debut Album “The Lost Boy”

The 2019 XXL Freshman released his debut album last night.

While everyone was busy refreshing for the Chance album YBN Cordae quietly stole the night. His new album The Lost Boy actually featured Chance The Rapper and dropped when it was supposed to. Also featuring Anderson .Paak on the standout jam “RNP,” and Pusha T, Meek Mill, Ty Dolla $ign, and Arin Ray on the rest of the album. Cordae sounds smooth and poised to take his spot with slick rhymes and an overall wonderful listening experience. You can find “RPN” and “Bad Idea” from YBN Cordae’s The Lost Boy on our Tasty! Jams playlists

Verzache Is Feeling Himself On New Song "Feeling That Feel"

Verzache Is Feeling Himself On New Song “Feeling That Feel”

Verzache’s third new track of the year.

Toronto’s Verzache, formerly known as Zach Farache, has just shared what may be his most upbeat and energetic song to date, the vibey “Feeling That Feel.” Following his recent releases, May’s moody “Cable” and the more melodic “January,” “Feeling That Feel” shows some impressive growth for Verzache who seems to be trying out some new production styles on this track, keeping a fast tempo and relying heavily on the warm 808’s that bounce off his quick lyrics. That being said, however different the track may feel from some of Verzache’s other work, like last year’s Thought Poolwhich nabbed the #2 spot on my list of The Best Albums of 2018, it still has that gorgeous, angelic feel. You can find “Feeling That Feel” from Verzache on top of our Tasty! Jams playlists.

La Felix Questions His "Past Life" In Funky New Song

La Felix Questions His “Past Life” In Funky New Song

La Felix gets extra funky on his latest offering.

La Felix is back yet again with another super funky Tasty! Jam. Following a string of catchy releases like “Real Thing,“Give Me Your Love,” and the Kole-featuring jam “Drama,” the New Zealand producer’s latest is sure to be one of your summer staples. “Past Life” features vocal contributions from Bonnydeon, which seems to be the singer’s first song credit. La Felix spoke a bit about how the song came together, adding “What started out as an Instagram conversation between the two of us grew into something new and refreshing. The song had a sense of longing and sadness to it. Bonny did a great job in capturing that feeling/vibe with her lyrics.” Give the warm summery jam a spin and see if anyone from your “Past Life” comes to mind.

You can find “Past Life” from La Felix and Bonnydeon on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

Goldwash Drops Debut Album "Flat Earth Surf Club"

Goldwash Delivers Yet Again With Soothing New Song “Over Again”

The third single from his upcoming debut features his brother, Baird.

Goldwash has been sharing some incredible music over the past few months, including the lovely “You Don’t Wanna Feed The Fire Anymore” and the jammy “Set In Motion,” and now he’s done it “Over Again.” The third single from his upcoming debut album Flat Earth Surf Club, due out sometime next month, features an infectious guitar riff performed by Goldwash’s actual brother who also makes some fun dream-pop music as Baird. Goldwash actually shared a pretty funny photo of the two performing at what looks to be their school talent show from 2009, captioning the photo “April, 2009- the Acheson hermanos shelve an early version of Over Again when the keyboard stretch proves too far at a school show. Now that Gabe is older and can reach, they’ll finally release the song Thursday.” Thankfully they did release the track and, all jokes aside, it’s a wonderful slow jam that will still keep you engaged with a powerful melody. You can find “Over Again” from Goldwash and Baird on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

Previously, Goldwash also scored Tasty! Jams for 2017’s “Episode” and last year’s “Rhythm Is Frozen.”

Listen: Four Tet Shares Energizing New Dance Jam "Dreamer"

Listen: Four Tet Shares Energizing New Dance Jam “Dreamer”

Four Tet’s third track of 2019.

This morning Four Tet shared the exhilarating jam “Dreamer.” Four Tet has been on a roll as of late. Not counting his long line of festival performances, including his Coachella set that I was able to catch in April, this marks his third new track of the year following “Teenage Birdsong” and his Nelly Furtado remix “Only Human.” “Dreamers” has that classic Four Tet-feel to it and will keep you on your toes for the entire run time. You can find “Dreamer” from Four Tet on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

More Giraffes Share Fun New Summer Jam "Surf"

More Giraffes Share Fun New Summer Jam “Surf”

More Giraffes share the followup to the infectious “Playground.”

More Giraffes, the LA-based duo of Keeley Baumford and Mark Hadley, just shared out “Surf,” their newest release in a long line of fun, lighthearted, jams. “Surf” follows the duo’s smash hit “Playground,” which was also produced by Sweater Beats, and is the second single from their upcoming Bermuda EP. The pair shared some thoughts on the song and their songwriting process, saying “We love imagining characters and creating vignettes in our songs, so we wrote the verses about someone leaving the material world behind to live their best life oceanside, chilling with dolphins and drinking negronis with turtles. More than anything it’s about self love.” The duo will be playing their first live LA show next month on August 21st at The Hi Hat so be sure to come out and show your support if you’re feeling “Surf.” You can find “Surf” on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

Easy Life Premiere Inspiring New Song "Earth" On BBC1

Easy Life Share Inspiring Video For New Song “Earth”

Easy Life have the hottest record on the “Earth”

Today, Easy Life, the UK band who’s exploded on to the scene in recent months, premiered their new song “Earth” on BBC 1 Radio. The song is heavily inspired by current events in the world, with Murray and Sam stopping by the BBC studio to introduce the track, saying “The world is a pretty messed up place and we wanted to write a song about that. So we did.” Sam added on, “You hear so much about the world having things wrong with it and as an individual you feel very powerless in this situation and I guess it’s trying to capture that.” It begins at 19:30.

The track itself has that instantly classic “Easy Life-feel” to it and, somehow, beautifully samples the “have you ever had a dream like this?” kid. Referencing spaceships and “crash landings” in the chorus of the track, the song feels very connected to the group’s recent Spaceships Mixtape. Previously, Easy Life shared two jazzy jams “Houseplants” and “Spaghetti Hoops”, and are currently performing at a string of festivals. You can find “Earth” from Easy Life on our Tasty! Jams playlists.

Oliver Tree Actually Opens Up For Once On H3 Podcast With Ethan & Hila Klein

Oliver Tree discussed his childhood, his deal with Atlantic Records, issues with YouTube’s age restrictions, and much more during his appearance.

Oliver Tree has become very well known for his extremely erratic behavior but today we saw a very different side of the bowl cut donning artist. During his appearance on the H3 Podcast, hosted by Ethan and Hila Klein, Oliver covered a range of personal topics and showed a much more tame side of his personality. Granted, the show did start off with a “vape off” between Tree and Ethan, but it got serious very quickly.

Oliver discussed the making of his music video “Hurt,” noting that he had been inspired to make the video since he was ten years old. The video has been age restricted by YouTube and the fight with the video streaming platform seems to have left Oliver creatively stifled in ways. Luckily the show’s host, who is a YouTuber himself, offered to reach out on Oliver’s behalf.

As the ninety minute interview continued Oliver discussed a variety of topics including his childhood, growing up in Santa Cruz, the rapidly developing drug problem there, and investing his own money into his music videos. He tells the story of how he got signed, getting flown to New York and subsequently pranking the CEO of Atlantic Records by falling off his Razor scooter and popping blood capsules in his mouth before his pitch meeting. He also touched on his former professional scooter freestyle career and on the injury that made him turn to music, adding that he’s broken eight bones.

Towards the end of the interview Oliver Tree revealed that his debut album is done and has been done for quite some time. He’s currently engaged in a battle with his label over the release date, which is still up in the air. He seemingly confirmed that his current tour would be his last before telling a story about a paranormal experience to end the interview.

It was quite refreshing to see a more controlled side of the man who’s known for pushing things to incredibly extreme level. Check out the full interview above and catch Oliver Tree on tour this summer.
